Our school holds sport in high regard and as a result has many different
sports facilities and equipment to offer. The outdoor multipurpose court is
fitted to accommodate basketball, netball, volleyball and tennis games.
On our oval we are equipped to stage rugby union, rugby league, AFL and
soccer games. Scheduled markings are also done by our groundsman to outline the
running track and all field events for the athletics carnival.
Throughout the year Goomeri State School P-10 holds three inter-house sports
carnivals; Swimming Carnival, Cross Country and the Athletics Carnival. Students participate on these days in their sports house, either Cook or
Flinders.
Along with these carnivals our students are encouraged to participate in
carnivals and trials leading to South Burnett and Wide Bay representation for
various sports.
Goomeri State School students from years 5 to 10 participate in sporting events with other schools from the Barambah Cluster.
The school also has an Equestrian team that participates at different
events. The equestrian team competes locally at the South Burnett Interschool
Equestrian Events, and regionally at the Fraser Coast Interschool Equestrian
Competition, in Maryborough. Leading up to these competitions several practice days,
which riders are expected to attend, are held to prepare them for the events.
Physical Education Swimming Lessons
Weekly school lessons in swimming are conducted at the Goomeri Swimming
Pool during the months of February, March, October and November. Pupils are
required to bring a suitable swimming costume (preferably a one piece for
girls) and a towel. Sunscreen needs to be worn during these lessons.
Improvements to Education Queensland's Sun Safety Strategy in 2008 make it
compulsory for primary school children in state schools to wear sunshirts or
T-shirts during school water based activities. This Sun Safety Strategy changes
will also mean that all primary and secondary schools must provide a
broad-spectrum, water resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or better for students to
apply on uncovered areas of the skin such as the face and back of the hands
when they are outdoors. All pupils are expected to participate unless they are
sick. A note is required if pupils are unable to participate on a given day.
